Endress+Hauser is once again able to offer a range of training options, from in-person courses at our training centre in Manchester or on-site, to time-efficient virtual sessions. The courses include basic to advanced instrumentation modules, training on industrial communication protocols and the internationally recognised CompEx qualification for explosive atmospheres, as well as tailored support for your industry and applications.
Face-to-face training
We have a suite of hands-on technical training courses for apprentices, experienced process engineers and maintenance staff, which can be delivered at our Application, Training & Engineering Centre (ATEC) or on your site. Situated next to our headquarters in Manchester, the ATEC is a purpose-built facility that is designed to simulate a real process environment with four process rigs equipped with commonly used instrumentation feeding into a central control room. The devices are linked to the latest cloud-based technology using Endress+Hauser’s Netilion ecosystem, as well as the commonly used communication protocols (PROFIBUS, Ethernet IP, 4–20mA HART and WirelessHART).
In addition, the training centre has a modern classroom with interactive software and AV equipment to allow all participants to actively take part in the training, and a purpose-built workshop for trainees to get hands-on with the equipment. In this environment course participants learn to maintain, fault-find, repair and reprogramme instruments at their own pace.
Lunch and refreshments are provided in the designated social areas. Our facilities are large enough to accommodate social distancing requirements, and we will abide by the current government regulations with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The courses
We have a portfolio of courses on instrumentation and networks in addition to accredited CompEx courses. In addition, we can create a tailor-made course for your organisation at the training centre or on your site. We also offer technical training to colleges and other educational establishments.
All our trainers are site-experienced engineers who understand the needs of the process industry. They are happy to address any questions you may have relating to your specific field or applications, and discussion is encouraged.
The training schedule for summer and autumn 2021 follows. If the dates or courses don’t meet your requirements, please contact us and we will be happy to accommodate you.
Instrumentation courses
Introduction to Process Measurement and Control
Aimed at apprentices and new starters, this four-day course is designed to provide new engineers with a basic knowledge of process measurement and control. With a high degree of practical content and assessment at key points, the course covers the basics of:
- metrology, including terminology, reasons to measure and basic types of measurement
- electronics, including 2-wire, 4-wire, analogue and digital
- signal transmission via 4-20mA and active/passive loops
- using a multimeter and test equipment
- digital communication
- process control – typical components, a simple overview of three-term control, practical operation
- measurement techniques: level, flow, temperature and pressure, including principles of operation, installation, connections, basic application and set-up.
This course runs on request at a time to suit you. To discuss your requirements or book a course, please call 0161 286 5000 or email info@uk.endress.com.
PROFIBUS and PROFINET
We currently offer four PROFIBUS courses:
- Certified PROFIBUS Installer: an introductory one-day course teaching the layout, installation and testing of complete PROFIBUS networks. The course provides a practical, hands-on approach to fieldbus network layout and installation and covers the essential requirements for a successful and maintainable PROFIBUS network.
- PROFIBUS Commissioning and Maintenance: a one-day course covering the practical techniques of fault-finding on operational PROFIBUS networks.
- Certified PROFIBUS Engineer: a four-day course designed for engineers who have completed the Certified PROFIBUS Installer course and have a thorough basic knowledge of PROFIBUS or other fieldbus systems. You will learn how to design, install, commission and troubleshoot PROFIBUS networks and how to use modern diagnostic tools, detect faults and identify their causes.
- Certified PROFIBUS System Design: a three-day course covering the optimal design of PROFIBUS automation and control systems. Participants must have completed the Certified PROFIBUS Installer course.
To check availability and to book your place, please call 0161 286 5000 or email info@uk.endress.com.
We currently offer three PROFINET courses:
- Certified PROFINET Installer: a practical one-day course that teaches the layout, installation and testing of PROFINET and other Industrial Ethernet networks.
- PROFINET Commissioning & Maintenance: a one-day add-on to the Certified PROFINET Installer course that covers the techniques and tools used for configuration, health-checking and fault-finding on PROFINET systems.
- Certified PROFINET Engineer: a four-day course aimed at engineers working at a technical level in automation or control systems. Participants must have completed the Certified PROFIBUS Installer course.

CompEx courses
CompEx is a training, validation, assessment and certification scheme for managers, engineers and technical operatives working in potentially hazardous or explosive atmospheres.
Potentially explosive atmospheres are found not only in onshore and offshore petrochemical plants and refining plants but also in the chemical, life sciences and food & beverage industries. Failure to ensure safe working practices in these environments could result in the ignition of explosive gases or dust clouds leading to injury or fatalities. As a result, CompEx is fast becoming a mandatory requirement for technicians and engineers both on and offshore.
Jointly developed by the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) and the training provider JTL, the CompEx scheme is nationally recognised as the industry standard and supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
CompEx combines practical training and assessment. Successful candidates will be awarded a credit card-style proof of competency, evidencing their ability to work safely in explosive atmospheres.
Who is the course aimed at?
Electrical and instrumentation personnel working in the process and control industries within a hazardous area who need to develop and demonstrate their competence in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment and instrumentation for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
The competency assessment is based on the following four modules:
• EX01: Preparation and installation of ATEX-rated systems for gas environments.
• EX02: Inspection and maintenance of ATEX-rated systems for gas environments.
• EX03: Preparation and installation of ATEX intrinsically safe systems.
• EX04: Inspection and maintenance of ATEX intrinsically safe systems.

Virtual training
If you can’t make it to the training centre in Manchester, or you want a more time-efficient option, we can deliver virtual training to your team on-site. Using Microsoft Teams or the GoTo meeting platform, we can deliver a similar experience to the face-to-face courses. Our camera set-up focuses on both the trainer and the instrumentation, so the practical element is still incorporated. All you need is a meeting room with a TV that can accommodate the participants. We can even view your instrumentation via video link and help you with application-specific requirements.
Virtual training is designed around the group of trainees, so please contact us to discuss your needs.
